Fun on Foot in America's Cities
Central Park Loop
This is the most popular running, jogging, and walking trail in the world.
New York's Central Park is a 2.5-mile by 0.5-mile tasteful nature preserve in
the middle of the densest population area of the country.  It is easily reached
on-foot from any hotel or residence in Midtown Manhattan, the Upper West
Side, the Upper East Side, or Harlem.  There are many attractions and
pleasant areas of nature preservation.  See where the people of Manhattan
wind down and have Fun on Foot, while building fitness.

Upper West Side
While a loop of Central Park definitely has its appeal, this Manhattan trail
has much more to offer.  It includes Central Park as the northbound part of
the route, but then switches over to the Hudson River and Riverside Park for
the southbound return.  You can choose to run or walk along the river or
divert by the impressive Grant Memorial.  Pleasant surprises abound for the
runner or walker!  End up in the Upper West Side's prime restaurant and bar
precinct.

Lower West Side
This route has innumerable cultural and recreational activities throughout,
plus scenic views of the lower Hudson and the Statue of Liberty.  Specific
attractions include the Intrepid Sea, Air, and Space Museum, Hudson River
Park, the Irish Hunger Memorial, Museum of Jewish Heritage, the World
Trade Center Sphere and eternal flame, and historic Castle Clinton at the
Battery.

NOTE:  The Intrepid Museum is closed for 18 months from Oct. 1, 2006.

Lower East Side and the Bridges
If you have never crossed the Brooklyn Bridge on foot, you have missed out
on one of life's great experiences.  This route offers much fresh air, plus
impressive sights of massive skyscrapers and bridges and also the
opportunity to negotiate two of those bridges  - the Brooklyn Bridge and
Manhattan Bridge - for some unforgettably spectacular views.  End in the
midst of an enormous choice of wind-down establishments in lower
Manhattan.  If you have not run or walked this trail before, it is a must-do!

City Hall to Bay Ridge
Explore Brooklyn [map], home to almost 2.5 million people, a fascinating
blend of diverse cultural sub-communities, handy to Manhattan via bridge
and subway, and with its own interesting history and beautiful shoreline.
Run or walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, see downtown Brooklyn, go
through several Brooklyn parks including car-free Prospect Park, Brooklyn's
answer to Central Park.  Take in the seashore trail and end in exciting Bay
Ridge
[map], in the shadow of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge.  Catch a
convenient subway back to Manhattan.

Brooklyn to Coney Island
Want to visit Coney Island with its beaches and famous amusement park?
Here is an on-foot route to there from Grand Army Plaza
[map].  You can take
the subway to Grand Army Plaza or, if you are happy to go the 11.5-mile total
distance, run from Manhattan.  Then run or walk through Prospect Park and
some interesting residential parts of Brooklyn via a very pleasant, wide,
tree-lined, truck-free road, with wide comfortable sidewalks all the way.
Enjoy Coney Island
[map], sample famous Nathan's, and ride the subway
back to Manhattan.
