Santa Monica to Marina del Rey
Los Angeles has one outstanding feature for the outdoor-inclined—the
string of beautiful Pacific Ocean beaches stretching virtually the entire
western perimeter of the metropolis. This stretch represents seaside
running at its best. We chose to cover a major piece of this territory, which
fits all of our criteria particularly well. This is the stretch between the seaside
city of Santa Monica and the classy marina district of Marina del Rey. Both
end points have substantial hotel accommodations so, if you are a visitor to
the region, you might well choose to stay near one end or the other.
Hollywood Hills
The Hollywood Hills represent a rare opportunity in the heart of Los Angeles
to escape from crowds and automobiles, while never being far from
civilization. In fact, there are many interesting attractions in or near this
vicinity. After considerable research and first-hand exploring, we put together
one particular route that meets all our criteria exceedingly well. It takes in the
wilderness and beauty of the Hollywood Reservoir, excellent views of
Hollywood and West Los Angeles, houses perched on rocky crags, the
Hollywood Sign, and ends in the tourist area of Hollywood Boulevard.
UCLA to Santa Monica
If you are staying or living on or near the UCLA campus, this route
represents an excellent way to get to the gorgeous beaches and
surrounding attractions of Santa Monica. Alternately, if you happen to be
staying in one of Santa Monica’s hotels and feel the need to experience
nearby attractions other than the beach, this is a great way to explore what
lies inland. This route exploits a street that represents a major anomaly in
the design of the Los Angeles regional road system - a wide, pleasant, tree-
lined road, including a center nature strip with paths for pedestrians.
